Goal: Students apply the concepts of energy efficient homes to the Three Little Pigs.
Objectives: Students will:
- Review energy efficiency
- Read a children's story
- Rewrite the story using vocabulary related to global climate change
- Read aloud
Materials (For a class of 30):
- 8 copies of The Three Little Pigs
- 1 copy of each page of the story
- Optional: 1 camera projection system
Time: 45 minutes
Standards Met: LA4, LA5, LA6, LA11, LA12
Procedure:
- Divide students into groups of 4.
- Pass out a copy of The Three Little Pigs to each group.
- If you have a camera projection system, read the story to the class projecting the pages as you read or read the story aloud and while the groups follow along.
- When you have completed the story, have each group brainstorm a list of terms relating to energy efficiency and global climate change. (E.g., is the straw house more or less efficient than the stick house or the brick house? If the houses had heating and air conditioning, which house would lose a lot of energy to the outside? How could they improve efficiency?)
- Assign each group one or two pages of the story and hand them copies of the pages.
- Have each group rewrite one page of the story of The Three Little Pigs using as many of the listed terms as possible.
- Start with page one and have students read their rewritten pages in order.
