The Three Little Pigs

Applies the concepts of energy efficiency to this classic story

Oceanic Absorption
Explores oceanic technique for carbon sequestration

Think Differently
Encourages creative personal action-taking

Who's Got Your Power?
Maps local energy sources

Writing & Analyzing Surveys
Gathers information from community members and analyzes results

Day 8 -Quick View
This day continues the examination of energy efficiency, by retelling the story of the Three Little Pigs.  Students explore the potential for the ocean to hold carbon dioxide.  To improve their understanding of small quantities of measurement, they conduct a lab experiment to understand parts per million. Students also continue their survey work from the previous day, conducting and analyzing data from the surveys they wrote the previous day.

Three Little Pigs - Students learn about different aspects of energy efficiency in the built environment. Based on this knowledge, students rewrite the Three Little Pigs, thinking about energy efficiency and architectural options.

Ocean Absorption
- In this lab, students investigate the potential for the ocean to absorb carbon dioxide by comparing fresh and saline water.  Students learn about the concepts of ocean fertilization and direct injection, and discuss potential affects on ocean life.

Think Differently - Students are challenged to find different ways to balance a pencil, an activity that encourages them to think about different ways to solve a problem.  Students are then tasked to find creative ways to take personal actions to reduce personal greenhouse gas emissions, and to evaluate those actions using a decision grid, balancing equity, environment and economy. Students then sign a pledge committing to taking personal action.

Who's Got Your Power - In this activity, students learn about and map local sources of energy. Using data provided by electric utilities, students will research their local utility company, identify what sources their utility uses to generate power, and create graphs to represent the data. They will plot power plant locations throughout the state, and choose one specific power plant to research in more depth.
