  • Barely a glimpse - Before Price Shock

    This is actually a 20 page article that takes you on a very short ride with MATLAB. A few very simple examples followed by a simple plotting exercise and several matrix algebra operations. To test the features presented, the "article" assumes that you have already installed MATLAB on your computer. Instructions for doing so are presented at the end of the article but the links provided lead to non-existent pages. A quick search reveals that MathWorks advised ITS to "no longer provide MATLAB software to students for installation". ... And so we learn that MATLAB is not free! It is available for purchase from MathWorks.com. 4 levels of pricing and licensing are presented: Standard, Education, Home, and Student with Individual, Group, Network Named User, and Concurrent Licensing options. At best this article serves as a tease to whet your appetite for more of what MATLAB has to offer. Unfortunately, even the price of the Home license option may be a deterrent for some and additional costs apply for Add-On products. Interesting to see what can be done with an advanced application even though the price of entry maybe a little steep for some.
